<p><p><b>Controller, Construction - 6 months</b></p></p> <p>Employment Type</p> <p>Contract</p> <p>Location</p> <p>Stratford, Ontario</p> Apply SHARE THIS JOB <br/> <p><p><b>Job Description:</b></p></p> <p>The Controller will lead the financial management, focused on delivering in-house developments. The role involves building financial systems, processes, and reporting frameworks to support current construction projects and future growth. A key responsibility is implementing a monthly drawing process that satisfies third-party cost monitoring requirements to ensure effective financing. The Controller will collaborate closely with the Director of Construction and the company's Corporate Finance team to align reporting, tax compliance, and audits. This position demands strong expertise in construction finance, project accounting, leadership, and systems implementation.</p> <p><b>Key Responsibilities:</b></p>
<p><b>Financial Management & Reporting</b></p>
<li>Ensure that projects will establish a monthly draw process that meets the needs of a third-party cost monitor, so that financing will be of use to the Company in an effective and efficient manner.</li>
<li>Lead all financial operations, including job costing, divisional P&L, and cashflow forecasting.</li>
<li>Oversee preparation of monthly financial statements for the company's Construction and ensure accuracy of reporting.</li>
<li>Develop systems and processes for construction-specific financial tracking (progress draws, holdbacks, change orders).</li>
<li>Ensure timely and accurate lender reporting and compliance with financing agreements.</li>
<li>Support annual budgeting, forecasting, and KPI tracking in alignment with company strategy.</li> <p><b>Project Support</b></p>
<li>Partner with Project Managers and Estimators to provide real-time budget tracking, variance analysis, and financial insights.</li>
<li>Review and validate project budgets, consultant contracts, and trade contracts from a financial risk perspective.</li>
<li>Oversee the preparation and review of monthly progress draws for all active projects.</li> <p><b>Governance & Compliance</b></p>
<li>Collaborate with Corporate Finance to ensure all tax filings, audits, and consolidated reporting requirements are met.</li>
<li>Establish internal controls and financial policies specific to construction operations.</li>
<li>Support the company's Construction in developing reporting standards and dashboards for ownership.</li> <p><b>Accounts Payable (AP)</b></p>
<li>Oversee accounts payable process for the company's Construction, ensuring timely and accurate payment of trade partners, consultants, and suppliers.</li>
<li>Develop and enforce approval workflows that align with approved project budgets and the authority of the Head of Construction.</li>
<li>Monitor aging of payables to maintain strong trade relationships and avoid delays in project delivery.</li> <p><b>Accounts Receivable (AR)</b></p>
<li>Track and manage accounts receivable in coordination with the company's Corporate, ensuring accuracy of invoices and timely collection of funds.</li>
<li>Oversee monthly progress draw submissions and reconcile collections against project cashflows.</li>
<li>Report regularly on receivables status and escalate risks to the Director of Construction and Ownership.</li> <p><b>Systems & Process Development</b></p>
<li>Lead implementation of construction-specific financial software and integration with Procore and/or corporate ERP systems.</li>
<li>Continuously improve financial processes, reporting accuracy, and efficiency.</li> <p><b>Leadership & Collaboration</b></p>
<li>Provide financial leadership to the construction team, building trust and accountability.</li>
<li>Communicate effectively across Construction and Corporate teams, ensuring alignment without duplication or conflict.</li>
<li>Serve as a business partner to the Director of Construction and Ownership in decision-making and long-term planning.</li>
<li>Assist with preparation of annual budget as required for specific entities.</li>
<li>Assist with annual audit of financial statements.</li>
<li>Preparation of personal, corporate and trust tax returns with year-end reconciliation working papers.</li>
<li>Gather supporting tax information for internal and external tax teams.</li>
<li>Assist in the preparation of regulatory filings and Tax filings.</li> <p>TMGCT</p> <p><p><b>Job Requirements:</b></p></p> <li>Bachelor’s Degree or Equivalent in Accounting or Finance</li>
<li>Completed or pursuing CPA Designation</li>
<li>8+ years of progressive experience in finance/accounting, with at least 5 years in a construction environment.</li>
<li>Strong knowledge of construction project accounting, including job costing, holdbacks, progress draws, and lender reporting.</li>
<li>Experience in financial planning, forecasting, and divisional P&L management.</li>
<li>Proven track record of implementing systems and building finance functions in growth-stage organizations.</li>
<li>Excellent communication and leadership skills; able to bridge technical financial detail with executive-level reporting.</li>
<li>Collaborative mindset with the ability to work across departments while maintaining clear accountability.</li> Apply
