Job Description

What is the opportunity?

This role is a key member of a team that acts as a centre of excellence for education and advocacy of information on RBC’s risk management practices and programs, leading to embedding a risk mindset in the business. This role will provide ongoing guidance to enable internal partners as the first line of defense – 1(a) point for regulatory, network, and legal requirements. Candidates need to be passionate about enabling our payments strategy, and equipped to act as a centre of expertise for business risk affecting payments across the enterprise. You will be part of a team that provides risk advice, counsel, and guidance to Cards product owners and senior management, to enable key business initiatives (e.g., ADT), as well as apply professional judgment to solve problems and find solutions to complex business risk scenarios through collaboration and consensus building. You will work closely with key stakeholders both internally and as part of industry forums, including with the various payment networks that RBC participates in (VISA and Mastercard). Responsible for scoping, evaluating and provision of advice/support as it relates to our evolving payment network needs and the intersection and impact of new network strategic drivers and mandates. You will support the effort to ensure comprehensive risk identification, evaluation, mitigation and monitoring across all risk types for the business unit across all channels in accordance with the Enterprise Risk Framework and its policies, including: (1) risk identification, assessment and mitigation; (2) risk control design testing and monitoring; and (3) risk issue resolution, ongoing attestation, reporting, and communication. This role also provides support in the oversight of compliance issues and regulatory implementations to ensure alignment with business strategies and operational constraints.

What will you do?

  • Assist in the evaluation of legal and regulatory risk. Evaluate internal controls and risk procedures and ensure that they have kept pace with the latest developments in the business and are documented appropriately.
  • Provide guidance and support for the strategic management of RBC’s payment network relationships (VISA and Mastercard).
  • Manage all aspects of business risk affecting network changes, including the development and ongoing monitoring of key metrics to measure business risk and the effectiveness and efficiency of associated internal control.
  • Help business partners develop policy requirements and design supporting processes and controls.
  • Support and provide guidance on Risk Assessments, ensuring risks are proactively identified and adequately mitigated and reported, creating action plans where necessary; support the business at any Risk Assessment Forum discussions; measure and monitor Risk Appetite, Key Risk Indicators and Control Testing Results; and ensure the accuracy and integrity of controls.
  • Gain the position of trusted advisor and help facilitate trade-off / prioritization decisions with senior leaders, functions, cross-functional project teams and colleagues by providing rigorous strategic risk and regulatory insight based on thorough research and analysis.
  • Strategically manage key regulatory requirements and reporting and support regulatory implementations to:
    • Ensure alignment with business strategies and operational requirements (i.e., implement so as to best align to our business strategies, is client-friendly, efficient, and commercially reasonable)
    • In partnership with Global Compliance, Law, RS&D, Networks, and other partners, consistently demonstrate industry-leading ability to expeditiously respond, address and resolve client issues, thereby gaining the confidence of regulatory bodies (FCAC, OSFI, etc.)

What do you need to succeed?

Must have:

  • 5-7+ years of experience in payments, with relevant expertise in business risk or compliance
  • Ability to identify, assess, and manage business risk related to payments, and provide proactive and solution-oriented guidance on risk management in support of strategy

  • Solid knowledge of RBC’s Business and Functional Units
  • Proven leadership, facilitation, negotiation and professional communication skills
  • Strong business acumen and understanding of processes, systems, technologies and strategic priorities
