Junior Mechanical Design Engineer – Power Transformers
Northern Transformer is a Canadian-owned, fast growing manufacturer of power transformers. Our team delivers transformers of the highest quality through superior design, quality workmanship and attention to our clients’ individual needs.
Due to the growth of our business, we have an opening for a Junior Mechanical Designer or Junior Mechanical Design Engineer to join our team. The ideal candidate will have 2-5 years of experience in the design of liquid filled power transformers from 5 to 200MVA, up to 230 kV.
Duties and Responsibilities of the “Junior Mechanical Design Engineer”
Responsible for mechanical design and detailing of various aspects of power transformers from 1 to 200MVA and up to 230kV:
Review of client specifications to gain greater understanding of TX design
Understanding of power transformer mechanical design (external and internal including electrical clearances), features, shipping and field considerations
Understanding of CSA, IEEE and ANSI standards with respect to power transformers
Creation of drawings, bills of material, work instructions and uploading ERP
Anticipate and assist with production processes and procedures to ensure high quality and smooth production
Technical leadership for the business
Engage with the manufacturing part of the business to ensure designs are built according to specifications.
Engage directly with suppliers to understand capabilities, resolve quality issues and identify new technologies
Assist with the generation of new design rules, practices and procedures
Increase use of software tools to improve productivity and reduce errors (design calculations, sharing of technical information, ERP uploading, preparation of requisitions, etc)
Ensure all work is performed in accordance with the company’s values of Quality, Safety and Service and company Environment, Health & Safety procedures and ISO9001 management system
Be flexible and take initiative on engineering and management tasks as required
Qualifications:
Engineering degree, with preferred professional licensure in Canada, US or Mexico
2+ years of engineering design work and experience in a power transformer design & manufacturing environment
Trained in welding processes and quality assessment
Excellent computer skills: specifically, 3D CAD, numerical analysis, related workflow programming, MS Office, Sharepoint, Epicor
Excellent organization, high degree of accuracy and attention to detail
Strong people skills – mentoring, team building, motivating, change agent
Strong client skills – empathy, trust building, fact based
Language: willing to continuously improve English skills
Located in Toronto area, Ontario, Canada
