This job posting is for an existing vacancy and therefore will be filled accordingly.


This position reports to the Manager of Fleet Operations and is responsible for coordinating fleet operations and planning, supervising and directing the activities of staff engaged in the repair and maintenance of vehicles and equipment, and providing the manager with strategic support with respect to sustainable fleet operations and best practices. Fleet Services performs work for various town operations including the Fire Department as well as Oakville Hydro, on light automotive, heavy truck, plows & winter control equipment, aerial devices, off-road, agricultural rating equipment, trailers, and small equipment encompassing some 1600 units. Fleet Services also operates Corporate Stores for materials management, distribution and other services.


What can I expect to do in this role?


As the Shop Supervisor you will:



  • Provide counsel and instruction for staff, including daily supervision, schedules, determining and distributing the required work assignments for the maintenance or repair of equipment and vehicles on a time response critical basis with varying priorities.

  • Oversee the quality and performance of technical staff operating on two shifts and participate in the training, recruitment & selection of new staff, and annual reviews.

  • Develop, implement, distribute, and review the short- and long-term fleet maintenance strategies for user clientele that meets budgetary confines, departments’ needs, all legal or prudent trade practices and aligns the scheduling of resources, both staff and material, to accomplish it.

  • Assist with the disposal of surplus, and the sourcing, demonstration, and acquisition of new equipment both for the fleet and the shop. This will include participating in the drafting and review of specifications for equipment and services, and the analysis / recommendation of the results. Determines scrap / rebuild decisions – equipment & components.

  • Ensure that all records, either manual or electronic, of vehicle information, maintenance and repair related data are properly kept to mandated standards. This position is the signing authority for all garage work.

  • Arrange with vendors for the outsourcing of specialty work requirements.

  • Account for the utilization and cost distribution of labour, parts, services and materials to clients.

  • Review monthly department costs. Participate and assist with capital and operating budgets.

  • Pursue, negotiate and resolve warranty issues with vendors.

  • Participate in seminars, research, and studies of fleet issues, independently or as assigned. Investigate and recommend training from appropriate methods and resources.

  • Liaise/confer regularly with staff, management, supervisors, vendors, both orally and written and at peer levels with other municipalities.

  • Ensure that all work practices and procedures comply with the Town of Oakville’s Health and Safety Program policies and guidelines.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.


How do I qualify?


Ideally you have graduated from secondary school and have your 310S Automotive and 310T Truck and Coach licences. Your formal education is augmented by progressively responsible positions that have resulted in outstanding leadership complemented by a highly developed understanding of municipal government and service delivery. You also hold a valid and unrestricted Ontario Driver’s license Class AZ or DZ with a driving record that demonstrates responsible and safe driving behavior. Note: Applicants with 6 or more points are ineligible for consideration.


In addition, your experience includes:



  • Eight (8) consecutive years of progressive experience within a diversified fleet operations context with at least three (3) years Supervisory experience, preferably within a union environment demonstrating strong leadership abilities with interpersonal, people management and business process skills.

  • Must have and be prepared to demonstrate a broad and thorough knowledge of equipment and vehicle types (automotive, heavy truck, off-road, agricultural) and all their operating systems / sub-systems.

  • Proficient with office automation and computer applications such as Microsoft Office products (word processing, spreadsheets, databases, internet, notes). Training is provided on fleet specific applications.

  • Must be able to demonstrate effective communication, both oral and written, customer service and problem-solving skills. Proficient time management skills and flexibility in adjusting between a variety of duties. Ability to work with minimal supervision and as part of a team.

  • Familiar with the legal and regulatory requirements pertaining to fleet operations and repairs.

  • Knowledge of welding and fabrication, bodywork, painting.

  • Must be able to interpret / trace / function with technical drawings (hard copy / electronic) for equipment, electrical, pneumatic, fluid circuits (hydraulic, water).

  • Demonstration of competency in detailed troubleshooting all equipment types.


Any or all of the following in addition to the minimums would be considered an asset:



  • Diploma in professional discipline pertinent to the job function.

  • 310 J Trailer Technician licence, 421 A HD Equipment Technician, 425 AAgricultural Equipment Technician.

  • CUFEM Certified Utility Fleet Mechanic diploma.

  • Aerial Device training or certificate (or equivalent experience) and familiarity with CSA and C225-00.

  • Wheel end training endorsement (MTO / ATS) or equivalent.

  • Air conditioning experience and certificate (Ozone depletion card).

  • Possession of heavy or light duty repair technician or Inspector's certificates for the Ontario Drive Clean program.

  • ICE-P and / or ICE-NG Alternative Fuels licence(s) and a Forklift operations certificate.

  • Previous budget management and administration experience. Familiarity with stores operations including materials management and distribution.
